April 4 - D

How bad is it that we're four days in and I'm having to count the days on my fingers to determine the letter... even after perusing other blogs that are participating?  Don't answer that.
I'm very sorry for how long this post goes! I couldn't help it!

Duck Tales (Capcom 1989) - You can hate on me all you want but I used to LOVE this game!  Sunny forests, icy mountains, dark caves, TRANSYLVANIA!!! ... What's not to love?  The soundtrack was amazing. (Yes, I have it)  Duck Tales was that perfect level of difficulty; enough to frustrate but fun enough to keep you from giving up.  I still play this occasionally.
***And because of this post, I just discovered they're remastering this game to be released on modern consoles later this year!!!***

Special Mentions: Dynasty Warriors - Hack n Slash through entire armies multi-player!
Donkey Kong Country - Need I say more?
Deja Vu (NES) - Strange game... but who can deny 8-bit jazz / swing music?

Dream Theater / Majesty
Dream Theater - (Alex, your recent mention of them inspired this choice)  In 1997, when my friend first showed me this song I laughed in his face.  Why's he sing like an opera woman? Why does the synth sound so dated?  Why can't they keep a predictable time signature? Why is he singing about stem cell research?? Why are their songs eight, or twelve, or twenty five minutes long???
Then they began to creep up on me... I discovered that this was FOUR musicians putting this together.  Their level of talent was unlike any band I'd ever heard.  Each individual riff from each instrument invaded my subconscious as I listened.  I grew immune to the repulsive element in James' voice.
It took almost ten years but they consumed me.  There was a span of about two years where I only listened to Dream Theater.  I'm not exaggerating.  Every album.  Over and over.  Now I'd begun picking out time signatures, or listening to songs over and over until I could.
I bought Petrucci's instructional books and CDs.  I've seen the band play twice, once in ATL Georgia, once in Greenville South Carolina.  I rioted internally when Portnoy left for A7x.  If I have a favorite band, it's probably Dream Theater.

Special Mentions: Days of the New - We cover them too
Dave Wise - Composer for the original Donkey Kong Country soundtracks!

  1. Lots of cool information here, and not too long a post. I've learned several things. Never heard of Petrucci or of the least respected name among clerics, to mention just two things. Now I know. :)
Good D post. Nice to meet you.

  2. Diventae sounds like a fun character to read!

  3. Glad to inform, Silvia, thanks for stopping by!

Tony, he's definitely been fun to write. What a miserable fellow. He'll find himself hopefully!

  4. Yay! DuckTales! I can't wait to see the remastered version too; that game rocked!

  5. I saw something about DuckTales the series being redone. Perhaps that's why they're updating the game?

  6. I know how you feel about the counting on fingers ...

Oh and in a British TV prog there was a 'fictional' beer called Feldspars and it's all I can think about when you mention it : D

  7. Jamie and Liz, I'm starting a fund RIGHT NOW to purchase that game as soon as it comes out... For my 2 year old son of course! :)
And I'd love it if they remade the cartoon!

Amo, that's hilarious. I shouldn't dwell on it too long or I might end up with a branch of that surname being brewers and distillers!

    1. hey come on now David, it ain't the worst idea... :D

    2. Oh indeed, not by far. It might actually have a future in the story!

  8. Just stopping by from the A-Z list to say hi :)

He he he, im counting on my fingers too! lol

Good luck with the rest of the challenge.
